The Office of the Chief Coroner is identifying the man who whose death is the centre of an external investigation of the RCMP.
The coroner’s office confirmed that 59-year-old Frederick Stephen McKay was the Indigenous man who walked away from his Prince Albert-area care home on Boxing Day.
McKay was found dead along a gravel road the following morning.
RCMP say foul play was not considered in his death but ordered an external investigation because they say the “police response may not have been sufficient.”
Because this is considered a “serious incident” involving an RCMP member, the Saskatchewan RCMP is following its policy of requesting an independent, external investigation into the actions of its members.
The Saskatoon Police Service will conduct the external investigation. The RCMP says they will be releasing the results of the investigation when it is complete.
The Coroner’s Office says they are investigating the death as well and are currently awaiting the results of an autopsy. It says it usually takes about 6 months to complete their investigation.
