The RCMP is launching an internal review into its response to a missing person report near Prince Albert that became a sudden death.
Prince Albert RCMP received a call on Boxing Day about a 59-year-old Indigenous male who had walked away, and was considered missing, from what was described as a care/support home about 10 km outside of the city.
The man was found dead the following morning alongside a grid road in the area.
Foul play is not suspected, but the RCMP says an initial review of the matter has determined that the “police response may not have been sufficient.”
Because this is considered a “serious incident” involving an RCMP member, the Saskatchewan RCMP is following its policy of requesting an independent, external investigation into the actions of its members.
The Saskatoon Police Service will conduct the external investigation and the RCMP has requested the Ministry of Justice to appoint an independent observer.
The man’s name has not been released because of privacy concerns, but the RCMP says it is “committed to advising the public of the outcome of both the internal review and the external investigation at the appropriate time.”
