Despite announcing his retirement this past summer, pro MMA fighter Devon Smith of La Ronge is getting back into the octagon next month.
Smith is scheduled to square off with Tyler Weran out of Saskatoon in a light-heavyweight bout at a Modern Fighting Championship event in Saskatoon in February.
“The opportunity came up to fight in Saskatoon, which is a lot closer to home than I usually get to fight,” said Smith. “I’ve had the past you know eight, nine months to think about it and I feel like I’m not quite ready to step away like I thought I was.”
Smith admits, he doesn’t know a lot about his opponent, but says that won’t be a hindrance.
“You know, it’s not actually that difficult,” said Smith. “Including amateur, pro and kickboxing, this will be the 20th time that I’ve stepped in there. So at this point, I’m not very concerned with what my opponent’s going to do, it’s just a matter of doing what I need to do, to get the win.”
Smith has a 3-4 record as a pro MMA fighter, while Weran is 2-0.
Smith’s fight is slated for February 23 at the Saskatoon Soccer Centre.
