Fishing will be free in Saskatchewan on Family Day long weekend

The province’s annual winter free fishing weekend will coincide with Family Day long weekend this year, running from February 17th to 19th.

Fishing in the province typically requires you to own a Saskatchewan fishing license, but this weekend public waterways will be open to anglers who may or may not be licensed.

“Ice fishing is an excellent way to enjoy nature with family and friends during the winter,” says Environment Minister Dustin Duncan. “Our lakes attract more than 250,000 anglers each year and the free fishing weekend is the perfect opportunity for both new and experienced anglers.”

Fishers are being reminded to take caution before setting out, and to always make sure that ice is thick enough to walk and fish on.

Other limitations including possession limits are still in effect.

Fishing in national parks and those planning to take fish out of the province will still require a license.
