One of Canada’s biggest international recording stars will be in Prince Albert Tuesday.

Cree singer-songwriter and activist Buffy Sainte-Marie has been making her mark in popular music for almost six decades, earning a number of Juno awards, honorary doctorates and even an Oscar along the way.

She was also a regular character on the children’s show Sesame Street.

Sainte-Marie’s songs have been covered by a number of artists, including Janis Joplin, Elvis Presley, Donavon, Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes.

She has also performed one of the best known versions of ‘The Circle Game’ by Joni Mitchell.

Her 1964 song ‘Universal Soldier’ is considered by many as one of the top anti-war anthems of the 20th century.

Sainte-Marie is in Prince Albert to promote her new album Medicine Songs.

Medicine Songs was recently chosen as best folk album of the year at the Indigenous Music Awards in Winnipeg.

Buffy Sainte-Marie was born on the Piapot First Nation in Saskatchewan, but she grew up south of the border in Massachusetts with adoptive parents.

After Prince Albert, she moves on to Saskatoon to play the Knox United Church on Wednesday night.
