32 high school students from northern Saskatchewan are in Regina this week to learn more about the province’s history, democracy and tour various post-secondary institutions.

The students come from the communities of Black Lake, Cumberland House, Dillon, La Loche, La Ronge, Deschambault Lake, Southend and Stony Rapids.

Taylor Harrington, a grade 11 student from La Ronge says she is finding the experience in visiting the capital valuable. “I’ve definitely considered coming here for post-secondary education before, but it’s brought a new light to that in that I would be able to experience what that would be like,” Harrington said.

As part of the four-day visit the students toured the Legislative building and participated in a mock parliament, which Harrington found pretty interesting.

“It was really cool. I’ve actually been to a parliament like this before, but it’s different than I’ve ever seen it,” Harrington explained.

Harrington joked when asked if she wanted to become a politician, saying they sit too much.

She was wearing an RCMP t-shirt saying that even though she thought about a career in politics, she wants to be a Mountie. “I want to be an RCMP officer, so that is something I’d probably end up doing,” explained Harrington.

Some students had to write an essay about their interest in the program and how they’ve demonstrated leadership in the community.
