The campaigning for the top position in the Assembly of First Nations is underway.

Incumbent National Chief Perry Bellegarde officially launched a bid for re-election today.

Bellegarde promised to work to maintain momentum, while redoubling efforts on measures to close the gap in the quality of life for First Nations peoples.

He is from Little Black Bear First Nation and served three terms as chief of the FSIN before becoming the AFN head chief in 2014.

Nominations for the election close Tuesday, June 19.

The vote for national chief is scheduled for July 25 during the AFN annual general assembly in Vancouver.
