Meadow Lake will have a junior hockey team to call its own this upcoming season.
The Meadow Lake Mustangs will be playing in the Western Provinces Hockey Association, a new league, which bills itself as Junior “A” hockey.
Meadow Lake’s Jason L’Heureux, who is Metis, was recently named head coach and general manager.
“Being from Meadow Lake, I know the community and know a lot of the people there,” said L’Heureux. “I think a well-run franchise would be supported there, so it was an opportunity I felt that was worth pursuing.”
L’Heureux is no stranger to junior hockey, as he played with the Battlefords North Stars and the Estevan Bruins in the SJHL. L’Heureux says he brings a wide range of coaching experience to the table. He’s worked with with kids at the novice-level, coached female midget AAA and has coached with the University of Regina Cougars.
He says the recruiting process to ice a team has begun.
“I’m just contacting a lot of the guys I know in the hockey community, you know – talking about players and kind of compiling a list and we will go from there,” said L’Heureux.
Maskwacis and Hinton, Alberta are some of the other teams committed to play in the Western Provinces Hockey Association this upcoming season.
