The Saskatchewan government and Ottawa have completed a land transfer at Wollaston Lake of a proposed water lot, as the federal government is taking administration and control of a public wharf.
“The federal government requires control to protect their investment. The wharf is quite a huge investment — to do that, they have to have ground control. That means they are responsible for all costs, all repairs, and is staying up to standards for the fishermen up at Wollaston,” said Greg Hayes, the manager of land stewardship for the Ministry of Environment.
Hayes says the federal government invested in the wharf in 2005, but only entered into an agreement with the province for a transfer in 2016.
An order-in-council dated July 12, 2018 indicates the conclusion of the land transfer. The OIC shows a delay in the agreement was caused as the land parcels and survey numbers were incorrectly identified in the agreement.
Hayes says when the federal government determines the land is no longer required for the wharf, the parcels will be returned to the province.
