Montreal Lake RCMP have charged a 28-year-old man after an officer was assaulted at a traffic stop on Wednesday.

Raini Henderson faces a number of charges including assaulting a police officer with a weapon, endangering the life of a peace officer, flight from police and impaired driving.

A woman who was also taken into custody has not been charged.

The incident occurred about 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday after RCMP had arrested the female passenger at the traffic stop.

The officer received minor injuries after being assaulted by the male occupant of the vehicle and a low-speed chase ensued.

At one point, with the driver avoiding a spike belt, another officer received minor injuries after being dragged alongside the vehicle.

After attempting to ram another RCMP vehicle, the other vehicle was eventually forced off the road and a suspect was taken into custody.

He suffered minor dog bites in the process.

Henderson has been remanded in custody and is due to appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court on Tuesday.
