The City of Regina is set to vote on naming a new park in the southeast area after a respected Cree language expert.

The Regina Planning Commission voted on Thursday to unanimously recommend to city council that the park be named Okimasis Park after Jean Okimasis.

Of the White Bear First Nation, Okimasis has written books, taught and is preserving the Cree language in the province.

Janine Baradich with the City of Regina says Okimasis is being recognized for her contributions to the area.

“Of her having made a significant contribution that has benefited our community greatly,” Baradich said. “As part of truth and reconciliation, we do want to see more park and street names named after Indigenous people.”

Baradich says she does not foresee any complications in the naming of the park, as city council will vote on the proposal August 27.

A naming sign could be erected soon after.
