Officials with Saskatchewan Environment say it should be another good fall for moose hunting in most areas of the province.

Once exception could be south of La Ronge, where the season for licenced sport hunters has been reduced this year.

Wildlife Ecologist Tom Perry says several wildlife management zones are affected.

“Last winter’s aerial survey and field reports indicate moose across the southern boreal plain, and those are wildlife management zones south of La Ronge to the forest fringe, are in a population decline,” he said. “In some wildlife management zones, the population is about 30 per cent lower than in 2010.”

The Ministry of the Environment has shortened the regular seasons for archery, early rifle and late rifle hunters for a number of wildlife management zones, including 55 to 59 and 63 to 69 south of La Ronge.

Perry says moose generally came through last winter in good condition.

The late spring may have impacted some calving, but ticks did not appear to be a major problem during the winter survey.
