The Métis Nation-Saskatchewan has announced a new initiative to monitor the effects of climate change in the province.

The first phase of the organization’s community-based climate monitoring program is being conducted with assistance from the provincial and federal governments.

The initial phase involves direct engagement with elders, Métis citizens and other residents.

The community engagement sessions are being hosted across the province.

“People can expect the Métis Nation-Saskatchewan to give their presentation on what environment means at the community level and what they would like to see happen in each community,” MN-S director of environment Reina Sinclair says. “Each session will be unique because every community is different.”

Sinclair says the community-based climate monitoring program is going to be a three to four-year initiative.

The next two phases of the initiative will involve planning and environmental monitoring.

Upcoming community engagement sessions include Cumberland House on Oct. 23, North Battleford Oct. 25, Regina Nov. 2 and Saskatoon Nov. 5.
