Former La Ronge Ice Wolves broadcaster Daniel Fink got the opportunity of a lifetime this past week.
Fink, the manager of hockey communications with the Manitoba Moose in the American Hockey League, was tasked with broadcasting four Moose games on a recent swing through the United States.
“Our play-by-play announcer had to duck out for the week and head off to B.C. for some family matters,” said Fink. “When they were talking about who they were going to try and get on short notice, somebody said, ‘Well, Daniel has done it before, let’s do him.’”
Fink started the four-game trip in San Antonio, TX last Tuesday and ended the swing in Chicago, IL Sunday. Tuesday marked the first game Fink had called in about 2.5 years.
“I was wondering if the motor would run, I won’t deny that – wasn’t too sure what would come rolling out,” said Fink. “When it came to the play-by-play, wasn’t too worried about that. It was more making sure that I had everything done, making sure I was taking care of all of the duties that Mitch Peacock would normally do.”
Fink served as the La Ronge Ice Wolves broadcaster on MBC Network Radio from 2010-2012. Following his time with the Ice Wolves, Fink worked with the Regina Pats in the WHL before accepting the position with the AHL’s Manitoba Moose.
Fink attended broadcasting school at SAIT Polytechnic in Calgary, AB with current La Ronge Ice Wolves broadcaster Braden Malsbury.
