Eight First Nations men who were hanged at Ford Battleford on Nov. 27, 1885 were honoured Tuesday afternoon at Wanuskewin Heritage Park.
The Indigenous men were hanged after being accused of treason in what became Canada’s largest recorded mass hanging.
“Any time we can help fix the wrongdoings of the past, it’s a good thing. It’s all about respect,” Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations Chief Bobby Cameron said at the ceremony. “Governments and others are doing this together. It’s a good gesture.”
“Searching for the path to reconciliation” was the theme of this year’s event.
