Another legal challenge has been launched in an ongoing battle over who actually won the 2017 Fond du Lac Dene Nation election for chief.
Last month, a federal court judge ruled the First Nation must appoint a new election appeal board and a previous challenge of the results re-heard.
In his ruling, Justice Favel noted the band had not followed its own election act in appointing the original board.
However, this ruling has now been appealed by Fond du Lac stating the federal court does not have jurisdiction in the band’s matters and too much time has elapsed since the election to appoint a new appeal board that would be both fair and impartial.
In the 2017 election for chief, Louie Mercredi defeated Kevin Mercredi by two votes.
The appeal was launched on Jan. 15.
