The federal government is investing $2.2 million over five years into mental health and education supports to students in La Loche.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the announcement three years, following a shooting which left four people dead and seven others wounded.
“We’re investing in new programs and resources for Dene High School. Funding cultural and language based programs, on the land activities and mental health services for students. This is about listening to you, after all you are best placed to know what your school community needs,” Trudeau told a group gathered at the school Wednesday.
The government says the funding comes following recommendations from the community, and supports the Holistic Healing Plan that Dene High School developed after the tragic shootings of 2016.
“That dark day in 2016 will never be forgotten, but it isn’t what defines La Loche. People here have shown strength, resilience, and determination to move forward. This funding is about supporting the community on its journey of healing, empowering young people, and building a better future for everyone who calls La Loche home,” said Trudeau.
Premier Scott Moe, joined by several Cabinet Ministers announced that his government would invest $3 million into building 12 staff housing units for the recruitment of professionals. Local company Methy Construction and Maintenance was awarded the contract.
