A two-day trial of a sister and brother accused of illegally occupying a Saskatchewan recreational site began in Prince Albert Wednesday morning.
Sylvia and Kurtis McAdam were served with non-compliance orders by Saskatchewan Environment in early 2017 for violating the province’s parks act.
At the time, the McAdams were building a cabin in the Zig Zag Bay area of Delaronde Lake, about 25 kilometres northeast of Big River.
The two say the area is part of their family’s traditional homeland under Treaty 6.
Saskatchewan conservation officer Frazer Parsons testified building a permanent cabin on the recreation site is a non-compatible use and would conflict with other campers.
Court also heard a number of cabins are constructed on private land just outside of the recreation area in what the province considers vacant Crown land.
Sylvia McAdam is one of the Idle No More movement co-founders.
Justice Gerald Morin is presiding over the trial.
It is scheduled to wrap up Thursday.
