Some members of the La Ronge RCMP detachment will be getting a taste of cold weather this weekend.

They are part of a winter survival training exercise led by the 4th Canadian Rangers Patrol Group.

Warrant Officer Michael Gilliard says the exercise involves heading into the bush and spending a couple of nights there.

“They will go through the five steps of survival and then they will build a lean-to and fires and take care of themselves for two days in the bush,” he says.

Gilliard adds the Canadian Rangers are looking to establish patrol groups in Stanley Mission and Southend.

If this works out, there could also be junior rangers’ groups set up in these two communities

On Friday morning a number of local Canadian Rangers visited the La Ronge RCMP detachment.

They were presented with a plaque and certificates in appreciation for all of the work they have done over the years assisting the RCMP with activities like search and rescue operations.
