It’s been a successful season for a northern Saskatchewan hockey team.
The Stanley Mission River Hawks recently took part in peewee provincials in the “C” division. The River Hawks defeated Beardy’s in round one before losing to Kinistino in the second round.
Devin Bernatchez is the coach of the Stanley Mission team and says they were the most northern club taking part in provincials.
“We had two southern teams having to come up to Stanley Mission to play games, so that’s a rare occurrence,” said Bernatchez. “Whenever we can get southern teams up north to play hockey, it’s a win-win for everybody.”
Bernatchez says the community rallied behind the team.
“Both games, we had big 50/50 draws and big crowds,” said Bernatchez. “I think the boys really enjoyed playing in front of a big crowd like that on their home ice.”
Bernatchez played in the SJHL with the La Ronge Ice Wolves and says one of the players on his team, Charena Naytowhow, was scouted by the Prince Albert Junior Bears program.
