As the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations calls for complete independence into the investigation of a Regina Police officer-involved shooting of an Indigenous man Saturday, the Attorney General is trying to assure impartiality.
Don Morgan says the Justice Ministry has appointed an external body with experience in police investigations to provide oversight.
“The Ministry appoints somebody from another police force or somebody external. It should be somebody that’s an officer, that’s got an understanding of how to do an investigation. But it cannot be somebody from that police force or service,” Morgan said. “If I was a member of that family I would want to know or be reassured that there’s going to be independence and some real diligence that is taking place.”
Morgan says that Chief Coroner Clive Weighill, former chief of Saskatoon Police is also assisting in the investigation.
“We have seen officers investigating their fellow officers and we all know how those investigations turn out. We are calling on the Regina Police Service to allow for an outside and independent oversight body to be a part of this investigation. We have been calling for this for years and these senseless police-related deaths keep happening,” explained FSIN Vice- Chief Dutch Lerat.
