The first Two Spirit Powwow is being held on the Beardy’s and Okemasis’ Cree Nation this Saturday.
The First Nation has partnered with OUTSaskatoon to host the event on the First Nation.
“In Beardy’s, our festival had always been focused on just celebrating pride. Celebrating the fact that we are Two Spirit, celebrating the fact it’s important to have symbols. And that’s what our parade was also about,” said Councilor Kevin Seesequasis.
The fourth annual Two-Spirit pride parade will also take place, during the month-long pride celebrations.
Seesequasis says the powwow is meant to be inclusive, but also he says he hope change will be brought about from the event.
“How this will continue to be a catalyst for change in our community. There has been a lot of oppression in our communities as a result of colonialism and residential schools,” explained Seesequasis.
The Powwow starts at 1PM.
