It was an exciting weekend for young hockey players as the NHL Entry Draft took place in Vancouver, B.C.
Meadow Lake’s Roddy Ross was selected in the sixth round (169th overall) by the Philadelphia Flyers. Ross, who is a member of the Canoe Lake First Nation, started the 2018-19 season with the Camrose Kodiaks in the AJHL before he signed with the WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds.
In 25 regular season games with Seattle, Ross posted a 2.76 GAA and .919 save percentage.
Meantime, two members of the Prince Albert Raiders were drafted over the weekend.
Forwards Brett Leason and Aliaksei Protas were both picked by the Washington Capitals. Leason was drafted in the second round (56th overall), while Protas was snagged in the third round (91st overall).
Leason had a breakout season with the Raiders, recording 89 points in 55 games. Protas tallied 40 points in 61 games.
