The 2019 Super 8 International U14 Boys Softball Series came to the Lac La Ronge Indian Band on Saturday.
The Sask. Prairie Selects took on a team from New Zealand in a doubleheader of action. New Zealand won the first game 13-9, while the Prairie Selects responded with an 18-11 victory in the second matchup.
“It was awesome,” said Jack Hrycuik, a player with the Prairie Selects. “I think playing these guys helps us get a better understanding of what we can go towards and what we can strive towards to be.”
Kevin Roberts is the manager and coach of the Prairie Selects. He says it was a great event.
“It was a good learning experience for a lot of the guys, some of our northern players here,” said Roberts. “Just a good all-round event to have ball, good calibre of ball being played here in northern Saskatchewan.”
New Zealand has been taking on teams throughout Saskatchewan.
“The hospitality is second to none, the boys are getting looked after, beautiful food,” said Gene Lutton, the head coach of New Zealand. “The people are welcoming, it’s an eye-opener, it’s wonderful to be here.”
