Flying Dust First Nation is getting set to host the Tony Cote First Nations Summer Games next week, but festivities are already underway.
The Lance Run kicked off earlier this week with a ceremony at First Nations University of Canada in Regina. Athletes will wind their way through Saskatchewan and eventually end up in Meadow Lake on Saturday.
“We are proud to be able to pass on this traditional knowledge and protocol to our younger generations,” said Flying Dust Chief Jeremy Norman in a news release.
“These youth are taking part in a ceremony that is an integral part of the Tony Cote Games. All of the youth involved live drug and alcohol-free lifestyles and are considered positive role models in the community. This Lance Run is a big commitment and all of these youth athletes are taking on the 10-day, 565 kilometre challenge with honour and passion for sport and culture.”
The opening ceremonies kick off Sunday.
