The La Ronge Ice Wolves are getting a defensive boost.
The Ice Wolves have added 17-year-old defenceman Alex Ozar to their roster.
“I think I’m just a simple defenceman who can move the puck north and south – and just help out any way I can,” said Ozar when describing the type of player he is.
The Prince Albert, SK product recorded 33 points in 40 games last season with the Prince Albert Mintos in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA League. He appeared in four pre-season games this year with the WHL’s Saskatoon Blades.
“We expect him to do some things with the puck, get involved in the offence, run the power play and be accountable defensively as well,” said La Ronge Ice Wolves Head Coach and GM Kevin Kaminski.
Ozar was selected first overall by the Ice Wolves in the 2017 SJHL Bantam Draft, he was also picked in the fifth round of the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft by the Saskatoon Blades.
Kaminski also says they have released 2001-born forward Brandt Fiske. Fiske, a La Ronge product, appeared in one game this season with the Ice Wolves, but he did not record a point.
Meantime, the Ice Wolves are back in action on Friday night when they host the Nipawin Hawks at the Mel Hegland Uniplex for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop.
Following Friday’s battle, the Ice Wolves travel to Nipawin on Saturday in the conclusion of the home-and-home series with the Hawks.
