MC College Saskatoon has terminated the employment of an instructor after making derogatory comments towards a First Nations person, who shared the texts on Facebook.
Chelsea Kowalchuk allegedly made negative comments towards Tami Eileen Whitehawk in a texting conversation earlier this month.
Upon hearing of the incident, MC College Saskatoon suspended Kowalchuk while it investigated.
“We can confirm that the person in question is no longer working for MC College,” said College President Joe Cairo in a Facebook statement. “We have sourced out cultural sensitivity training for all staff to participate in. This is an effort to make sure we learn and grow and that our students feel safe and valued while receiving their education.”
The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations was quick to denounce the comments and called for the firing of the instructor. “Racism and racist comments can never be justified or tolerated under any circumstances,” a Facebook statement read.
Cairo said he understands the outrage and anger the incident has caused, but noted it did not involve any of the current staff and students.
