The Northern Lights School Division is yet again facing another school year where it needs to recruit more teachers.
Jason Young, Director Education confirms that nine teachers need to be hired. “As of last week we had nine vacancies. Four of them were continuing or permanent positions, but the other five are temporary,” Young explained. “I’d say the areas where we still need teachers would be in La Loche, there are a few vacancies in La Loche. But most of them would be in Pinehouse and Sandy Bay.”
Young could not provide a timeframe on completing the recruitment process, but said the school division is receiving and reviewing resumes daily and setting up interviews with candidates to see if they would be good fit for the respective school.
Young said the school division is in a better position this year than last. At the start of the 2018-19 school year, 14 positions needed to be filled with vacancies in La Ronge, Pinehouse Lake, La Loche, Stony Rapids and Sandy Bay.
Young called the high vacancy rate last year as an anomaly, where only three or four positions normally need to be filled.
