The Liberal candidate for Desnethé–Missinippi–Churchill River said a re-elected Liberal government will continue to improve the lives of First Nations people.

“We want to defend Treaty Rights together by designing a new process to ensure that Canada lives up to the spirit and intent of the Treaties. And a new National Treaty Commissioner’s office will be established,” Tammy Cook-Searson said.

Cook-Searson listed off a number of areas the Liberals are committed to in closing the gap for First Nations such as; providing  high quality, culturally relevant health care and mental health services, increasing infrastructure funding and ending remaining boil water advisories by 2021.

“People in Northern Saskatchewan know that for Canada to succeed, First Nations and Métis peoples need to be able to thrive,” explained Cook-Searson.

Yet on the campaign door knocking, it appears housing and high power bills are top of mind.

“There are people who are homeless. There’s overcrowding, homes need to be renovated and there’s mold in the homes. Those are things that matter to community members when I go visit people at their doors,” said Cook-Searson.

Election Day is October 21.
