Several members of the La Ronge Ice Wolves have been recognized for their strong play.
James Philpott has been named the SJHL Defenceman of the Week. In two games since joining the La Ronge Ice Wolves from the Melville Millionaires, Philpott has tallied four points. In his first game with La Ronge, Phillpott recorded three assists against Melville Friday night.
“It’s great (to get the award),” said Philpott. “Step into the new team, get to play the old team right away and being able to contribute towards that win definitely felt good. Just being able to help out against Humboldt felt good as well.”
For the second time this season, La Ronge’s Liam McGarva is the SJHL Goalie of the Week. The Fort Saskatchewan, AB product stopped 28 shots Friday when the Ice Wolves downed the Melville Millionaires 5-2 at the Mel Hegland Uniplex. He then made 31 saves Saturday in Humboldt when La Ronge beat the Broncos 5-1.
“As a team, from last weekend, we just regrouped from that and we focused on what we needed to do. I think we accomplished that,” said McGarva.
Meantime, Ice Wolves forward Aaron Greyeyes was the runner-up for the Rookie of the Week prize. Greyeyes had three points in two games over the weekend.
La Ronge Ice Wolves forward Kyle Ford is the runner-up for the SJHL Rookie of the Month award. In 22 games this season, Ford has collected 24 points.
The Ice Wolves are back in action on Friday at home when they host the Kindersley Klippers at the Mel Hegland Uniplex. Friday’s game gets underway at 7:30 p.m. and the Ice Wolves will search for their third straight win.
La Ronge closes out its weekend Saturday when they finish a weekend series on home ice against the Klippers.
