First Nations people living in urban municipalities are being asked how they envision self-government and self-determination.

The Coalition of Aboriginal Peoples of Saskatchewan (CAPS) is conducting outreach and engagement sessions examining representation.

“There is a pressing issue here of who represents urban Indigenous People. Is it the First Nations bands that basically don’t have any jurisdiction beyond their reservations and have never really spoken for the people in the urban centers,” President John Hanikenne asked.

CAPS held a session in Prince Albert and is expected to conduct similar discussions in North Battleford and Saskatoon.

“So many Aboriginal people are unaware of the rapid transformation that is taking place in Regina with many of our people choosing to live here and advancing new and exciting models of self-government,” said Hanikenne.

“We have to look at those and look at proper models of governance and what we want to do in the urban centers to make it a better place for Indigenous People.”

The Coalition of Aboriginal Peoples of Saskatchewan will be holding its Regina event at the Indigenous Christian Fellowship on January 11.
