The province is not discouraging First Nations from establishing roadside checkpoints into their communities, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
First Nations are stopping vehicles to ask questions about traveling.
“We do not take issue with these actions as First Nations are taking responsible steps to protect their community members,” a statement from the Ministry of Government Relations said.
The Muscowpetung First Nation Monday setup an informational checkpoint for all vehicles exiting or entering the community.
Motorists can be expected to be asked about their recent travel or current destination.
The First Nation asks that those entering the community follow proper handwashing and sanitization procedures.
The Cowessess First Nations is doing similar activities.
“We understand that Canada is working with First Nations to communicate information on social distancing requirements in relation to road monitoring and stopping motorists,” said the government. “Roadblocks of a provincial highway by any group is not permitted.”
