In the third round and with the 34th overall pick in the 2020 SJHL Bantam Draft, the La Ronge Ice Wolves selected forward Zane Normand from Saskatoon.
“I think I’m a smaller player who likes to play the body,” said Normand. “I like being a grinder, somebody who isn’t afraid to get into the corners. I like to kind of aggravate people – try to get them to take a penalty.”
Normand recorded 39 points in 30 games with the Saskatoon Stallions U15 AA team during the 2019-20 campaign, which was a 30-point improvement from his previous season with the Stallions.
“After that (the 2018-19 season), I went to some camps in like Regina, there was some WHL things, some prospect things,” said Normand. “They told me – just be more confident and practice like all the time, every day, grab a ball and just practice, keeping your head up while stickhandling. I’ve been trying to practice everything.”
Normand will suit up for the Battlefords Stars U18 AAA team for the 2020-21 campaign. He will be coached by Dale Grayston, who was previously the head coach of the Beardy’s Blackhawks.
Meanwhile, the Ice Wolves took seven players in the recent SJHL Bantam Draft.
