Hockey legend Fred Sasakamoose has passed away at the age of 86.
The announcement was made by his son Neil in a video posted to Facebook. Sasakamoose was admitted to hospital in Saskatoon after contracting the COVID-19 virus. His hospitalization led to an outpouring of support from the hockey community.
RIP to my buddy, Freddy Sasakamoose.
He was a trailblazer, a leader and a survivor.
He paved the way for so many Indigenous hockey players.

Sasakamoose, who is from Ahtakakoop First Nation made history when he became the first Indigenous hockey player to suit up in the NHL. Sasakamoose played 11 games for the Chicago Blackhawks during the 1953-54 season.

Sasakamoose was a member of the Order of Canada, which he was inducted into in 2017. He was also a member of the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame, which inducted him as a builder in 2007.
