A First Nations woman is alleging RCMP officers used excessive force and she suffered a concussion as a result after a dispute at the La Ronge Health Centre last month.
Lac La Ronge Indian Band member Emily Kammermayer said she took her two-year-old son into the hospital on Dec. 29 after he injured his arm.
Based on the injury, she said she was convinced her son needed an x-ray but the attending doctor refused to authorize one and an argument ensued.
RCMP were then called to the scene and Kammermayer said she was seriously assaulted a number of times by three officers.
“I was punched in the head about four to five times and once in my face,” she said. “One of the officers grabbed my by the hair and threw me to the ground. I was in shock and trying to squirm free. One of the officers placed their knee on my neck and I couldn’t breath. Only after I stopped screaming did the officer remove his knee from my neck and my shoulder.”
She is alleging things continued to worsen after she was taken to the La Ronge RCMP detachment.
“Upon arriving to the detachment, the officers threw me onto the ground, lifted me by the hair and told me to, “hop like a bunny,” to my cell wall laughing (the officers were). I felt as if my limbs and neck were being torn apart. I was screaming in pain. It was worse than childbirth.”
According to local court documents, Kammermayer has been charged with a number of offences including assault of a police officer, assault, resisting arrest and uttering threats.
RCMP spokesperson Corporal Rob King said the force would not be commenting while the matter is before the courts.
Kammermayer said she has filed an official complaint with the RCMP and is considering outside legal action.
