The current owner of the Prince Albert Pulp Mill have just announced an investment in the facility.
In a media release sent out Friday morning Paper Excellence said they are spending $600,000 on engineering and consulting work for the mill which has been closed since 2006.
In the release the company’s Vice President of Energy and Business Development Carlo Dal Monte said the company plans to replace the fiber line from the digester to the last bleaching stage. He added this will replace the “heart of the mill” and take full advantage of the existing boiler, which he said is one of the most modern in the country.
“While this is an expensive strategy, it will simplify construction and minimize commissioning risks,” said Dal Monte.
Dal Monte said when the facility starts up it will produce better quality products, be more environmentally friendly and operate in a more cost effective manner then it did previously.
The company said they are meeting with the provincial government and local Indigenous groups to talk about shared funding, project timelines and investment opportunities. The company added once reopened the mill would have a big impact economically.
“Paper Excellence looks forward to the day when the site can employee 200 people creating over $300 million per year in economic benefits for Prince Albert and all of Saskatchewan.” The release said.
