A northern Saskatchewan First Nation is battling a COVID-19 outbreak.

According to a news release, the Hatchet Lake Denesuline Nation has been in lockdown since last week with a total of 109 cases linked to the outbreak.

The First Nation is calling for additional supports from both federal and provincial governments to help deal with the outbreak.

Hatchet Lake leadership says the community continues to struggle with inadequate housing and water infrastructure made only worse by the pandemic.

The community says five trailers and five hotel rooms reserved for isolation are almost at capacity while the local health centre is operating at beyond capacity.

Hatchet Lake is also requesting the assistance of the Canadian Rangers to help with the distribution of food, firewood and care packages
