A public inquest into the death of a 25-year-old man who died in police custody in northwestern Saskatchewan three years ago will be held in Saskatoon later this month.

Trevor McCallum died in cells at the Meadow Lake RCMP detachment on April 10, 2018.

The provincial coroner’s act requires an inquest be held if a person dies in a correctional facility unless the coroner determines the death was entirely of natural causes and not preventable.

Its purpose is to establish who died, when, where and cause of death.

A coroner’s jury does not determine fault but may make recommendations on how similar deaths may be prevented in the future.

The inquest will be held July 26-30.
