RCMP are saying little after a 44-year-old woman died in police custody in Sandy Bay early Monday morning.

Mounties say the woman had been taken into custody Sunday evening and was found unresponsive at the detachment around 11:20 p.m.

She was pronounced deceased on scene shortly after midnight.

Saskatchewan RCMP have asked the Moose Jaw Police Service to investigate.

As part of the Saskatchewan Police Act, an independent investigation observer will be appointed.

RCMP have also asked a second observer of First Nations ancestry be appointed in accordance with the Saskatchewan Police Amendment Act.

Mounties are not releasing the women’s name and will only say she had been taken into custody as part of an ongoing investigation.
