Cameco is looking to collaborate with a nuclear reactor company in the United States.
The Saskatchewan uranium company and X-energy recently signed a memorandum of understanding to work together on the development and deployment of small reactors in Canada and the United States.
X-Energy is a large nuclear reactor company that builds and operates both large and small-scale nuclear reactors.
Both companies are looking into ways they could work together, which would see Cameco provide fuel for X-Energy’s small modular reactor technology.
“We feel very confident about the future of nuclear power and the future of SMRs, here in Canada, in the U.S. And across the globe,” said Cameco president CEO Tim Gitzel. “We intend to be a fuel supplier of choice for the emerging SMR and advance reactor market and look forward to working with X-energy to see what opportunities might exist around their innovative reactor technology.”
According to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission small modular reactors are seen by many as a better way forward for nuclear energy and provide a cleaner substitute to traditional reactors.
The CNSC says these smaller nuclear reactors may also provide better power to more remote areas.
