A 33-year-old man has died while in the custody of the Prince Albert police.

Police say the man was arrested this past Sunday afternoon on outstanding warrants and was scheduled to appear in court.

Later on Sunday evening, the man was found unresponsive in his cell.

Police say, paramedics on shift provided medical attention and he was taken to Victoria Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Police say his death is being investigated as an in-custody death.

The man’s name will not be released at the request of his family.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday and several independent agencies will be tasked with investigating the 33-year-old’s death.

This latest death comes after two people died while in Prince Albert police custody last month.

In the wake of these deaths, the Prince Albert Grand Council called for transparency in the investigations.

The Prince Albert Police Service says they are committed to transparency and accountability and support a thorough investigation.
