A Métis organization in Saskatoon has launched a mobile resource centre to help people experiencing homelessness.
The Central Urban Métis Federation Inc. says they have converted a motorhome and a bus into a mobile office and resource centre.
The goal of the centre will be to provide culturally appropriate supports and help point people in the right direction to find support.
CUMFI president Shirley Isbister says for years, the organization has seen the obstacles faced by people living in poverty. She says she is excited to now bring help directly to them.
“We are very excited to have the Mobile Housing and Community Resource Centre out in the community,” said Shirley Isbister, President of CUMFI. “For years we have wanted a one-stop-shop for people to receive the help they need, and this new mobile centre is one way that we can improve access to housing and services in Saskatoon.”
The mobile centre was made possible through the financial assistance of $449,836 from the Government of Canada’s Reaching Home Program.
The unit will move around Saskatoon and has partnered with four different locations to park Monday through Thursday.
Those Locations are FreshCo Foods (33rd St), City Centre Church (20th St), and Colliers McClocklin (Westgate Plaza), and Giant Tiger (22nd St).
Isbister says the mobile centre has only been in operation since last week and already has provided help for 90 people.
