Dangerous Persons Alert issued by Spiritwood RCMP for Witchekan Lake First Nation

Tuesday, September 6 – 6:30am

One suspect, Kelly Witchekan, has been arrested. Melvin Starblanket is still at-large. The Dangerous Person Alert has been cancelled at this point.

5:38 p.m. update – Monday, September 5

RCMP say they are now looking for two suspects in relation to the reported shooting on Witchekan Lake First Nation.

Mounties say the dark red Mustang has been located and investigators determined it was not involved in the shoooting incident from earlier in the day.

Auhtorities say the scope of this investigation has changed and the alert is now focussed on the Witchekan Lake First Nation and surrounding area.

RCMP are actively trying to locate two suspects:

Kelly Witchekan is 22 years old. He has brown hair and eyes, and is 5’9” and 140 lbs. Melvin Starblanket is 33-years-old. He has black hair and brown eyes, and is 5’9” inches and 160 lbs. Both have connections to Witchekan Lake First Nation. They are pictured above (Photo provided by the RCMP.)

At this time, tRCMP still believe this is not connected to the James Smith Cree Nation investigation.

Residents in Witchekan Lake First Nation should continue to take appropriate precautions.

1:29 p.m. Update -Monday, September 5

RCMP say the suspects were sighted earlier today in a mid-2000s dark red Mustang. As they have access to a vehicle, authorities have extended the alert province-wide.

Police say suspects may be in mid-2000s dark red Mustang.

Police continue to say this incident is not connected to the James Smith Cree Nation investigation.

Anyone who sees this vehicle should not approach it. Report sightings, suspicious persons, or information to 911.

12:43 p.m. Update -Monday, September 5

Spiritwood RCMP is investigating reports of shots fired on Witchekan Lake First Nation.

Authorities say several armed suspects are at large, possibly on foot. At this time, RCMP believe this incident is not connected to the James Smith Cree Nation investigation.

If in the area, members of the public are asked seek immediate shelter/shelter in place and to not leave a secure location. Use caution allowing others into your residence. DO NOT APPROACH suspicious persons. Do not pick up hitch hikers. Report suspicious persons, emergencies or info to 9 1 1. Do not disclose police locations.
