A public inquest will be held next month into the death of an Indigenous man at the Saskatoon Provincial Correctional Centre.
William Whitebear was found unresponsive in his cell on November 2, 2020.SPCC staff and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel responded, and lifesaving attempts were made, but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced deceased.
The Saskatchewan Coroners Service is responsible for the investigation of all sudden, unexpected deaths. The purpose of an inquest is to establish who died, when and where that person died and the medical cause and manner of death. The coroner’s jury may make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.
The inquest will be held June 5 to 9, at the Saskatoon Inn and Conference Centre.
