The Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC) is speaking out about the death of a young woman in provincial custody.

PAGC is calling for a transparent investigation in to the death of 23-year-old Tatiana Custer. Custer died Jan. 3 at the Pine Grove Correctional Centre in Prince Albert.

In a media release sent out by PAGC Wednesday, Grand Chief Brian Hardlotte said he has concerns about a lack of communication from provincial corrections officials and Prince Albert Police Service (PAPS). Specifically, Hardlotte said Custer’s family has not been provided information about her death nor have they been briefed about the status of the investigation into her death.

“The absence of clarity and open communication with Ms. Custer’s family following her tragic death is unacceptable,” said Hardlotte.

The PAGC leader said going forward there needs to be better communication with Custer’s family and reiterated the tribal council’s call for a transparent investigation.

“Only a prompt and thorough investigation along with improved communication protocols can prevent such failures in the future,” said Hardlotte.

Custer, who leaves behind a five year old child is set to be buried Thursday in Stanley Mission.
