A memorial walk for a Metis woman killed in Prince Albert in 2022 is planned for Green Lake this weekend.
The second annual Taya Sinclair memorial walk will take place Saturday afternoon.
According to members of Sincair’s family, there will also be a beading workshop Friday night in the community followed by the memorial walk the next day.
“We want to educate people on missing and murdered Indigenous women, that they are not forgotten and we want to keep there memory alive,” said Taya Sinclair’s mother Gloria Sinclair in a conversation with MBC Radio News. A conversation that also involved Taya’s auntie Donna Aubichon.
Taya Sinclair was first reported missing on March 14, 2022. Her body would be found in Prince Albert shortly after.
Three people are charged in relation to her death. Two face a charge of first-degree murder and one faces a charge of manslaughter.
When asked what Taya Sinclair meant to her family, Donna Aubichon, said “she left us a lifetime of laughter.”
“She was a very funny comical girl,” said Aubichon. “She loved her children, her children were her world. By her being that funny and comical girl she was a fun-loving mother, and you can see that in her children today.”
Aubichon says the memorial walk is about healing.
“Come and join our family. Come and walk and help heal with us because this memorial is all about healing, and educating, and remembering, and honouring your loved ones.”
Meanwhile, police say the matter continues to be an open investigation.
“We haven’t got many answers yet as to what happened to her,” said Aubichon. “But we know more arrests are to come, so investigators can’t say much right now.”
Michael Smillie, one of the people charged with the first-degree murder of Sinclair, will have his trial in December.
