A Cree language educator from Stanley Mission has been named to the Order of Canada.
Solomon Ratt, an author, educator, and longtime advocate for the revitalization of the Cree Language was recognized by the Governor General with the nation’s highest honour this week.
Ratt was born in Stanley Mission, eventually teaching at the First Nations University of Canada where he developed the first ever bachelor’s degree in Cree language studies.
The educator is also the author of several books, and a video series, helping teach the Cree language across Western Canada.
He is one of 83 Canadians given the honour this year.
Ratt will be inducted into the Order at a ceremony in the coming months.
