On January 13, 2019, 56-year-old Joanne Wolfe-Lafond was found dead outside her Muskeg Lake Cree Nation home.
Her death was ruled a homicide by the police and was also considered suspicious.
Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes was handling the investigation originally. Since then, the Saskatchewan RCMP Historical Crimes Unit has taken charge of the investigation.
The initial investigation determined her death to be suspicious; since then, the RCMP’s Historical Case Unit has taken charge of the investigation.
“Significant advancements in these types of investigations would not be possible without the help of witnesses and community members coming forward,” stated Corporal Tanya Gordon of the HCU in a media release.
Police advise that there will be a heavy police presence on the First Nation over the next couple of days while they conduct a search in relation to the homicide.
