After 8 years of planning Moosomin First Nation is celebrating the grand opening of a new school.

In 2016, plans began on the Chief Moosomin School on the First Nation to replace the old school, which was nearly 50 year old.

On Tuesday morning, the First Nation celebrated the grand opening of its new school.

“I am very proud to see the vision of our Elders, as well as our current and former leaders, come to be and excited for the future of our young people to be learning at home in a new school created especially for them,” said Moosomin First Nation Chief Cheryl Kahpeaysewat. “The Chief Moosomin School will provide students the environment for learning, and it will also serve as a community gathering area and emergency shelter location.”

The 5,000 square metre state of the art building is designed with expressions of Moosomin First Nation’s culture in mind.

It features severa; Cree language wall designs and the Chief Yellow Sky cultural room.

The new school will begin accepting students this fall.

Indigenous Services Canada invested nearly $37 million into the project.

Mossomin First Nation is located around 30km north of North Battleford and is a member nation of the Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs.
