A rally was held today in Prince Albert with the aim of bringing justice for a man who was killed last month.
52-year-old Trevor LePlante was well known and well-loved in the city, being a longtime McDonald’s employee and Raiders superfan.
On July 22, LePlante was found on 18th Street East, unconscious and not breathing. When police responded to assist Parkland Ambulance, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The following day, police announced that a suspect was arrested and charged in relation to LePlante’s death. 33-year-old Michael Bird is facing charges of second-degree murder and indignity to a body.
The rally began today at 8 a.m. at the Provincial Court House, where Bird made his second court appearance. His trial is now adjourned until August 28.
“I’ve known Trevor since I was around 7 years old as a young boy, he was working at Burger King you’d always see a smile on his face, even when he moved over to McDonalds. At every Raider game, he was there cheering his loudest; he’s become everybody’s favourite, he’s just that good of a guy,” said Jeff Perehudoff, LePlante’s longtime friend and rally organizer.
Métis Nation Saskatchewan began collecting donations for LePlantes friends and family following his death and has already raised over $15,000.
The rally is meant to bring justice for LePlante, but the community is also spreading awareness about the dangers in the city and calling for changes.
“We want change; we want our streets to be safe. Again, we want proper justice for Trevor, but also, our streets are failing us, it’s getting too dangerous; we need to change,” explained Perehudoff.
The rally wrapped up at City Hall around 10:30 a.m.
